Sunday, 10:47pm. The family chat lights up: which bin is it this week? Someone peers out at next door's drive, and nobody's quite sure.
As of 15 October 2026, there's a calmer way. WhatBins 1.0 is on the App Store for iPhone.
Why we built it
Bin days are different on almost every street. Which bin goes out, how often, and what goes in it all depend on your address, and they change more often than you'd think: bank holidays, seasonal rounds and new collection days.
There's more change on the way. England's Simpler Recycling rules are bringing new bins, new food waste collections and new rounds to many areas over the next few years. The rules set what gets collected; your council still decides when.
We wanted one place that simply knows. So we built it.
What WhatBins does
- One glance, done. See your next collections and which bin goes out first, with big, bold dates you can read from across the kitchen.
- Know when things change. WhatBins keeps your schedule up to date and shows the new dates when your council moves a collection.
- Look after more than one home. Keep Gran's bins on schedule, give the uni house a fighting chance and stay on top of the rental, all in one app.
- Reminders before bin day. A nudge at 7pm the evening before each collection.
- Missed collection? One tap. WhatBins takes you straight to your council's missed collection page.
- Bin-cleaning visits. Track them alongside your collections, marked with a little blue drop.
- Make them yours. Decorate each bin with stickers, and add a Home Screen widget that answers the question before you ask it.
Private by design
There's no account to create and we never ask for your name. The app has no advertising, no tracking and no analytics. Our privacy policy explains exactly what we hold and why.
Free and Premium
WhatBins is free to download, and checking your collection schedule is free.
WhatBins Premium adds reminders at 7pm the evening before each collection, multiple properties, cleaning schedules for each bin, custom bin stickers and weather for collection day. Premium is £0.99 a month or £9.99 a year, bought through Apple as an in-app subscription, with a two-week free trial for new subscribers.
Where it works
WhatBins launches in Leeds, Wakefield and Kirklees, and we're adding more councils as we grow.
The quickest way to check is to enter your postcode in the app. If your area isn't covered yet, tell us your council and we'll look into it.
What's next
This is version 1.0, the start rather than the finish. Next up: more councils, and a few extras we're looking forward to sharing. We'll post every update here, in our release notes.
Questions, wrong dates or a feature idea? Email support@whatbins.app and a real person will reply.
We keep on top of it and let you know the second it changes. You just put the right bin out.

Press release
WhatBins launches on iPhone to answer a weekly household question: which bin is it?
The new app shows each household which bin goes out next, and tells them when their collection schedule changes
Leeds, UK, 15 October 2026 – WhatBins, a new bin collection app for iPhone, launches today on the App Store. Households enter their postcode, pick their address and see at a glance which bin goes out next and when. If the council changes the schedule, WhatBins shows the new dates. The app launches in Leeds, Wakefield and Kirklees, with more councils being added as it grows.
A small question that never goes away
Bin days are different on almost every street. Which bin goes out, how often and what goes in it all depend on the address, and schedules move around bank holidays, seasonal rounds and changes to services. For many families, that means a Sunday-night group chat, a look at next door's drive and a guess.
That's set to get more complicated. England's Simpler Recycling rules came into force on 31 March 2026, setting out the types of waste councils must collect from every home, including weekly food waste (Defra). Collection days and rounds remain local decisions, so many households can expect new bins, new collections and new rounds over the next few years.
The answer on the Home Screen
WhatBins puts the answer on the iPhone Home Screen. Features at launch include:
- the next collections at your address and which bin goes out first, in big, bold dates
- updated dates when a council changes a collection
- several homes in one app, from parents' and grandparents' houses to student flats and rentals
- reminders before bin day
- a one-tap link to the council's missed collection page
- bin-cleaning visits tracked alongside collections
- bin stickers and a Home Screen widget
WhatBins is designed to be private. There's no account to create, it never asks for a name, and the app contains no advertising, tracking or analytics.
Availability and pricing
WhatBins is available now for iPhone on the App Store. It's free to download, and checking a collection schedule is free. WhatBins Premium adds reminders at 7pm the evening before each collection, multiple properties, cleaning schedules for each bin, custom bin stickers and weather for collection day. It costs £0.99 a month or £9.99 a year, bought through Apple as an in-app subscription, with a two-week free trial for new subscribers.
The app launches in Leeds, Wakefield and Kirklees, and more councils are being added. People in other areas can ask in the app to be told when their council is added.
"Every household asks the same question every week, and the answer is different on every street. We built WhatBins so that nobody has to guess, wrestle with a clunky council website or check next door's bins again. With recycling rules changing across England, we keep on top of it and let you know the second it changes, so you can just put the right bin out."
– Gary McAdam, Founder, WhatBins
